Rules & Regulations

The NEMA Short Film Competition is a short film and video competition open to all independent filmmakers – amateurs and/or professionals residing in North America.

Requirements:

1. To register an entry, email the following details to film@nemausa.org.

Please send a check for  $15 as registration fee, payable to NEMA, to Vivek Nair, 3 Cadogan Way, Nashua, NH 03062.

2. All short films must be received by NEMA no later than August 1st, 2013. Please submit your registration by emailing

film@nemausa.org on or before June 1st 2013.

The short film will be admitted to the competition when the team uploads the completed film-clip onto a website (website details will be mailed in later) AND sends in the fee as mentioned above.

3. The maximum length of the short film cannot exceed exactly 15:00 minutes including front and back credits.

4. The short-film must be entered into any of the following 2 categories:

  • Live Action Fiction
  • Documentary

Documentary short subjects will not be accepted in the Live Action Fiction category or vice-versa.

Note: All communications between NEMA and the contesting team will be only through the director of the movie.

Judgment:

1. A qualified panel of judges will judge eligible entries on the basis of the following:

Live Action Fiction:

  • Cinematography (16%)
  • Screenplay/story (16%)
  • Acting (16%)
  • Sound and other technical aspects (16%)
  • Creativity/originality (16%)
  • Overall impression (20%)

Documentary:

  •  Cinematography (20%)
  • Originality and relevance of subject matter (20%)
  • Effectiveness of communicating subject matter (20%)
  • Sound and other technical aspects (20%)
  • Overall impression (20%)

2. Winners will be selected based on the total score of the eligible entries.

3. In the event of a tie, the winning entry will be the entry among the tied entries with the highest score in the criterion of “Overall impression”.

4. Video submissions that show excessive and/ or graphic violence, pornography, or inappropriate subject matter will not be considered for judgment.

 

Legal:

1. Short films that are submitted must be the entrant’s original work and shall not infringe on any copyrights or any other rights of any third parties.

2. By entering the competition, the entrant agrees that NEMA will not be held liable for any copyright infringements perpetrated by you or your short film.

3. The Director/author of the short film will be solely responsible for any copyright infringement.

 

FAQ:

1. Will there be different groups for adults, teenagers and children?
Answer: Given resource limitations, we will have only one group. All films will be judged based on a common standard.

2. What languages can be used?
Answer: Malayalam and English

3. What is the theme of the film competition?
Answer: We have decided not to provide a theme for the competition. You may film based on any appropriate theme.

4. Are there any time limitations we should consider?
Answer: All films must be limited to exactly 15:00 minutes including front and back credits.

5. How many artists can participate in the film?
Answer: There is no limit on the maximum number of participants.

6. Are multiple entries allowed?
Answer: Yes multiple entries from the same Director are accepted but each must have its own Entry Form & Fee Payment.

7. Can the director act in the film?
Answer: Yes, the director can act in the film.

8. What type of filming device should be used?
Answer: You can use any filming device that you have. Simply ensure that the film clip can be uploaded onto a service like YouTube.

9. Will NEMA provide the filming device (Camcorder etc)?
Answer: No, The contestants must arrange for their own filming devices.

10. Where can we find the Entry Form?
Answer: Please download the entry form from the NEMA website and mail it over to film@nemausa.org by June 1st 2012.

11. Whom should we contact in case of questions?
Answer: Please email film@nemausa.org with doubts/questions. All communication between NEMA and the contesting team will be only through the director of the movie.

12. What is the recommended timeline for filming?
Answer: It’s recommended that you finish the script by June 1st and devote at least 2 months for filming and editing.

13. When will the results be announced?
Answer: The results will be announced during the NEMA Onam Celebrations in September. The winning entries may also be screened the same day.
